Another Great Night at the Brickhouse

We had one of our best shows in a while this past Friday at the Brickhouse. We jammed a bit longer on a few tunes and tried some new things that really rocked—most notably on "You Got That Too" and "This is What it Is". Thank you to everyone who came out and made the night that much more special.

TSGD will be back at the Brickhouse on November 26th, but until then, you can catch us at one of the best bars in the Bronx—An Beal Bocht on November 13th.

Check our Facebook page for more details.

Next Show-The Brickhouse Brewery

Thanks to Mickey and his crew for hosting us during our Albany trip! It was a great time, and we hope to get back up there for another show in the near future.

Sorry I haven't posted any pictures or videos yet...its been a crazy week, I'll get them up soon.

In the meantime, check us out this Friday night (9/17) at The Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue, NY. We will be going on at 10pm sharp, and will be playing till about 1:30 or so.

Check out the bar at http://www.brickhousebrewery.com/

Also, my friend Sean just showed me a great site for listening to live music. Check out http://www.daytrotter.com/ . Basically, these guys out in Illinois have a barn, and they invite musicians who are passing through the country to stop by and live record 4 songs. The quality is great, and there is a huge list of bands to listen to. Plus, you can download all the shows for free.

I only started listening about a few minutes ago, but I recommend any of the shows by Dawes or Delta Spirit.

While you're at it, check out Seans site: http://dontwakethescarecrow.com/blog/

Hope to see you this Friday in Patchogue,
Dan

Albany or Bust!

This is it!

Our very last show before the unofficial end of summer; The Sun Gets Down and co. will be heading up to Albany for a gig this Saturday night at Elda's on Lark. What a great way to wrap up the summer! Thanks very much to our friend Mickey and the Albany crew for setting up the gig for us.

Also, a huge thanks to everyone who came out this summer to support the band. Much apologies that the album is not out yet...but don't worry...it's coming! Our friends Mike and Emmett are busy taking care of the final touches, so expect somthing very, very, very soon.

In the meantime, check the blog and facebook for videos and pictures from this upcoming weekend, and from our previous recording sessions with Mike and Emmett.

See ya in Albany!

Wrapping up "Ties to the Grid"

Well, after all the hard work, preparation, multiple takes, late nights, Red Bulls, coffee, note-taking sessions, ideas, arguments, laughs and trips to Connecticut, we can finally say our first album is DONE...sort of.

We're fresh off our final recording session for "Ties to the Grid" after one last trip up to Hartford. We stayed up until 4am on Friday going over each song and thinking of ideas for improvements. On Saturday, it was time to execute them. After a short, yet EXTREMELY productive day of recording guitars, piano, claps and harmonies at the Hartt Institute, we wrapped up "Ties to the Grid" on our end.

Thank you to Mike (and his fiance Mary), Emmett,"Rusty" and all the engineers at Telefunken Studios for staying up late with us and helping so, so much throughout the entire recording process. We love you and we appreciate everything more than you know.

So as I mentioned, we are "sort of" finished with the album. Next up is having some studio musicians (and good friends like Emmett Drake) record some guitar, percussion, horns and organ tracks—then the mixing and mastering phase will begin.

In the meantime, TSGD will be taking photos, designing the album art, copyrighting songs and promoting the release of the album.

We are indescribably pumped for the final product. We can't wait for it to hit your ears. TIES TO THE GRID IS COMING!

Check out a few pictures from the weekend here.

Due to a double-booking issue at the Local 269 bar, TSGD will not be able to play Friday's set as scheduled. We apologize to everyone who made arrangements to come see us. We are just as disappointed as you are.

But there's good news! We were able to book a last minute NYC gig at a downtown bar called "Affair on 8th." Thank you Brenda!

Thank you to everyone who came out and made our show at the Brickhouse a banger!

The Sun Gets Down is excited to have a very special guest join us on the Brickhouse Brewery stage this Friday.

Week of Three

It's going to be a busy week....

It all starts Tuesday when we kick off our summer residency at Declan Quinn's in Bay Shore. After that, we've got another big gig at the Brickhouse Brewery (Friday at 9:30pm) and we close the week with a house party performance in Islip on Saturday.

That's 3 TSGD shows in one week at some great Long Island venues. So gather your friends, family and lovers and make plans to get down with The Sun Gets Down.

Tuesday Night's Squad

The first night of our Tuesday residency at Declan Quinn's is June 8th.

Quinn's will be our unofficial home base for the summer—not just on Tuesday nights, but also because we'll be performing at the 2010 Declan Quinn's Music Festival AND Quinn's will be playing host to our CD release party for our first studio album, "Ties to the Grid".

Needless to say, we'll be spending a lot of time on 4th Avenue in Bay Shore this summer.

Look for pictures from EVERY Tuesday night on our Facebook page. The photo album will be entitled "Tuesday Night's Squad" and we'll post the pictures a day or two after each gig. Feel free to add some shots of your own, tag yourself and comment!

Also, keep checking here and our Facebok page for sneak previews of tracks from our new album.

Ties to the... Stage

We revealed our new style as we suited up to hit the stage at An Beal Bocht last Saturday. I've gotta say, the suits freakin' rock and we're looking forward to donning them at our gigs from now on.

In addition to the suits, last Saturday marked another milestone for TSGD—it was our first gig as a trio. All I can say is, you have to see it for yourself. The trio puts a whole different paint job on our music and has ignited a new energy in the band that is plain to see. We're three musicians with no place to hide except behind our instruments... and we're lovin' it. We've really stepped up our game, so expect to see a reinvented TSGD this summer.

As always, thank you to everyone who came to the BX and got down. You guys give us the energy to perform. We appreciate the dancing, singing and support. You are the best!

Bronx...nuff said

While I am supposed to be finishing a paper for my grad class, I would much rather be on here writing to everyone. So, before my coffee high wears off, I just wanted to plug our next gig up in The Bronx.

Some call it the Boogie Down, others say its actually Riverdale. I at one point called it home. Going to college there, I have a special spot in my heart for the Bronx, and I take advantage of any chance to go back and visit.

Ok enough of the sappy stuff, we are playing at one of the citys coolest spots to drink, chill and listen to live music. An Beal Bocht has no stage, fancy lighting, or tv's. We play on the ground floor, mano y mano with those who come to hang out and listen.

Interested? I bet you are...we will be playing there May 15th, the day after my 24th Birthday...so leave your comfort zone of the west village or mid town Manhattan and come spend a night with us in the borough that the B&T's would never dare to visit...

Until then, check out An Beal Bochts website: www.anbealbochtcafe.com

Farewell Jesse

We are saddened to announced that our bassist and good friend Jesse Blank will be leaving The Sun Gets Down and moving to Arizona. Although we are upset to see him go, we wish him the best of luck out west.

Jesse's last gig with the band will be this Saturday, April 10th at the Brickhouse Brewery in Patchogue NY. So come hang with us and see our final show with Jesse Blank.

"From the very first time we jammed together, I knew that he was something special. Jesse can funk, rock, groove, lay back, solo... he can do it all.  The bottom line is—Jesse is an incredible talent. Over the past year and a half, he has never ceased to amaze me with his playing. I'll miss him dearly and so will The Sun Gets Down and our fans."

-Ryan

And We're Back

After months of dedication to our album, the band is putting its focus back on what we love most—playing live.

Look for TSGD in the Bronx, Brooklyn and Manhattan in the coming months, as well as spots around the Island—from the Hamptons to Nassau County.

Be sure to keep checking back here, on our Facebook and Myspace for updated dates and information about where we'll be this spring and summer. We've got some great gigs at some hip joints coming up, so be sure to free up your schedule to get down with us.

Greetings from Buenos Aires!

Hello everyone, while down visiting my brother in Buenos Aires, I took a minute to check my email and facbook updates to see whats going on up in The States. To my surprise, I found some great videos that Marie Cousineau posted of us from our Kenny's Castaways gig!

To see these, go to our facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#!/pages/The-Sun-Gets-Down/50567417735?ref=ts

Don't forget to join us April 10th at The Brickhouse brewery in Patchogue NY...and be patient...I have had alot of people ask me about the album and when the release date is...my only answer is hopefully soon! As Ryan has mentioned previously, our good friends Mike and Emmett are hard at work in Connecticut doing all the mixing and fine tuning. Right now, we are planning for a late spring/early summer release of Ties To The Grid.

Until then, keep spreading the word on TSGD. Encourage friends to check our myspace, blog, and if you have any of our demos... share them with everyone you know!

Let the Drummer Kick

Howdy. We just got word from our producer Mike that the percussion and organ tracks are going to be recorded very soon. Thanks to the help of Mike and Emmett, Ties to the Grid is going to feature some extremely talented backing musicians. Exciting stuff!

Attack of Fred

Everyone stay tuned for some posts by our good friend Fred. Fred has been supporting us since Jesse and I joined up with Ryan and James, and he played a key role during our first recording session up in Connecticut.

I am not too sure what he will be talking about...I assume it's music related. I apologize if he offends you. But just remember that if he does, you probably deserved it...

MC Pipes and Drums

As some of you know, aside from The Sun Gets Down, I also play Scottish-Style drums in Pipe Bands. Being one of the best months of the year, this March has been packed with weekends spent at different parades in the New York Metro area. Here are a bunch of pictures from my parades with The Manhattan College Pipe and Drum Band. Whether it be marching down Manhattan's 5th Ave, or posing for a picture with the NY Jets Flight Crew, this is a great group of guys and gals who know how to have a good time.

Add some funk to your life

We are eternally preparing for the release of Ties to the Grid. In addition to the arduous recording and mixing process, we also have copyrighting fees, album art, CD development, website design and the planning of the release party on our plate.

Stress is abundant in these times!

On another note (I’ll be a melvin and call attention to the musical pun in “note”), James and I have also been working on a side-project with our good friend Charley Robinson. The unnamed funk/rock, mostly instrumental trio features Charley on guitar, James on bass and me on drums and percussion. It’s been a refreshing experience to work with a new musician and to get behind some different instruments. We’re really connecting as a group and I'm excited to release some of the stuff we've been writing.

Look for a name, myspace, Facebook, logo, website, videos, gigs and all that good stuff to come!

AND OF COURSE...

Keep checking back for more TSGD gigs and album updates!

Album Update

As of right now, Ties to the Grid is looking like it's going to be available by the beginning of summer. The recording process has slowed down a bit due to scheduling difficulties, but that doesn't mean there hasn't been any progress. Mike and Emmett (our producers/engineers) have been working hard to mix the tracks we put down in January—specifically "Meticulous Critic", "Truth", "You Gotta Believe in Something" and "Down the Middle".

Organ, piano, slide guitars and more are coming soon... and hopefully we'll have a few sneak previews for you in the coming weeks.

Keep checking back for more updates, photos, videos, setlists and more!

We'll see you at Kenny's Castaways in NYC on Thursday!

Pictures from The Bronx Ale House

Hey all, here are a few pictures from last nights show supporting the guys at The Bronx Brewery. Thanks again to these guys for having us, we had a great time, and the their
Riverd(Ale) brew was amazing.

(The mini kit that ryan was talking about...thanks to Greg Burrows for the tom mount!)

Band from the Block

The Bronx Brewery tasting was sweet! Great beer and a great vibe at the Bronx Ale House. Thank you to everyone at The Bronx Brewery for having us play at the event—we wish you the best of luck!

Check out the brewery's site at thebronxbrewery.com and support New York Beer!

We kept a low profile and played an acoustic set with Dan on a small kit... but it was one of the best sets we've played this year. The bar was packed and we were really feeding off the energy.

The band is getting more and more comfortable with the songs on the album and we're beginning to do some jamming and improving on them. Dan did some nice hi-hat and ride work on the outro of "You Got That Too," which gave the tune a funkier sound and lifted it to a higher place. "Beast of Burden" was the cover that stole show again. For whatever reason, we really take to that 6/8 groove... and the crowd can tell.

Good times in the boogie down Bronx.

Rage at The Sage!

What's good cats and kittens? Don't forget that we'll be at The Safe Cafe in Bluepoint, NY this Saturday, February 20th @ 10pm.

We're going to be playing a few tunes that we haven't performed in a while. Songs like "Trouble-making Shoes" and "My Sanity" have really come to life during practice and we know that they are going to be even more powerful live.

Since the band has had some time between trips to the studio, we've been writing new stuff and perfecting some songs that we've put on the back burner. We're getting a bit more funk/jazz/jam oriented lately, which is making some sweet tunes. You're going to dig the sound for sure.

Anyway, we hope to see you at The Sage!

Steeeeeeve Perry

Thank you to everyone who came and supported us at the Trolley Barn on Saturday. It was great to see all your faces in the crowd.

The band got in the groove early with some powerful tunes. "Jimmy Don't Tell No Lie" was a highlight of the night, along with "Dark Haired Beauties," which we haven't played in months.

We also played a few of our usual covers—"Rocky Raccoon" and "What Time Is It?"—but "Beast of Burden" was the one that brought the house down. It was one of the best renditions we've ever played—lot's of energy.

Although there were some requests for "Don't Stop Believin'", the band decided to hold off on the Journey songs and close out the night with "You Gotta Believe in Something"... much to the dismay of a few snaggletoothed bar trolls.

If you couldn't make it, check out saturday's set...

Expect us to go on around 9:30.

A few pictures

I am still learning how to convert my video files into a format that will allow me to post them. In the meantime, enjoy some pictures from our first weekend of recording.
Enjoy~

Expect More

After another trip to Connecticut to track some more guitars and percussion for Ties to the Grid, we’re starting to see the album take shape.

The bulk of the tunes are finished, but Mike and Emmett had some great suggestions for some literal bells and metaphorical whistles for a few songs, which is going to add some more flavor to the album.

I don’t want to toot my own horn, because I’m not that flexible, but I think this album is going to be out of this world. And soon, the keys, horns, strings, and slide guitars are going to be recorded with the help of some of the most talented musicians we know. I’ve never in my wildest dreams thought I’d hear full orchestra arrangements behind our music.

Ties to the Grid is going to knock you off your feet, make you fall in love, and we hope, open your eyes to the potential of The Sun Gets Down.
